Relationship goals 5: Don’t quit

Check out our bumper video for our “Relationship Goals” series.

A fresh start

I want to set the tone for this series. Because a relationship series can be discouraging. All of the shoulda, coulda, wouldas come to mind. Especially if you’ve been working on your relationship for awhile. But I want you to remember that we serve a God whose mercies begin afresh each morning.

Don’t quit

Marriage is a covenant, not a contract. It is an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person. Let’s take a look at the differences between a covenant and a contract in the table below:

CovenantContract
Based on mutual commitment*Based on mutual distrust
Surrenders rights and assumes responsibilitiesProtects rights and shirks responsibilities
Has the interests of the other in mindHas personal convenience in mind

*Commitment means: being willing to be unhappy for a time while we work it out!

Don’t quit; commit!

Instead of quitting, make the following commitments to your spouse. For a detailed breakdown of each commitment, listen to the message audio!

  1. Make the choice to love (yes, it’s a choice sometimes!)
  2. Prioritize your relationship (make time for each other)
  3. Put your trust in God (people always eventually let you down; God doesn’t!)

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Matthew 19:3-6 NIV

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

(Colossians 3:14 NIV)
