In today’s message we encouraged members and visitors to our church to take the next step in their faith: Water baptism. A lot of people have had Baptism experiences that were prior to their decision to follow Christ. In other words, they were baptized as a child or christened as a baby. Some of those experiences are incredibly meaningful, and I’m not taking anything away from them. However, all of the examples of water Baptisms in the New Testament were based on a decision. That’s why we dedicate babies and we baptize believers.
In baptism we show that we have been saved from death and doom by the resurrection of Christ; not because our bodies are washed clean by the water but because in being baptized we are turning to God and asking him to cleanse our hearts from sin.
